Tram No. 34, built in 1917/18 by Duncan and Fraser for the Hawthorn Tramways Trust, entering service in March 1918 as number No. 31. Renumbered 137 in 1920 when the Trust was taken over by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board. Sold to the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) and renumbered 34 in January 1947.

At the time of closure of the SECV operated tramways was donated to the Australian Electric Transport Museum (AETM), Adelaide and operated at their St Kilda Museum Tramway.

Returned to Ballarat during 2022, with an agreement that ownership will pass to the Ballarat Tramway Museum when reconstruction to operating condition is completed.

2025/2026 – The tram is at the Bendigo Tramway Workshops for repair and repainting.  Repainting is nearing completion.  The bogies are being refurbished with motor repairs and new wheels made.

History

1917-1918 – Built by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide, delivered to the Hawthorn Tramways Trust as tram 31 and entered service during Jan. 1918.

2/1920 – the HTT taken over by the MMTB and renumbered as tram 137

5/1925 – modified by the MMTB cutting an aisleway through the drop centre seats and providing destination boxes.

7/1930 – painted MMTB green and cream

1/1947 – sold to the SECV for use in Ballarat.  After modifications, entered service as tram 34.

1952 – fitted with tail lights

1954 – fitted with reflective triangles

1961 – fitted with dash canopy lights

19/9/1961 – last tram to leave Lydiard St North.

9/1971 – Donated to the Australian Electric Traction Museum, Adelaide and operated on their St Kilda (Adelaide) tram line.

2022 – returned to Ballarat for work to enable it to operate on the Ballarat Tramway Museum after the completion of work.

2025 – moved to Bendigo Tramway Workshops for body repairs and repainting
