The horses were back
20 April 2023
The big Clydesdales from Sandy Creek returned to the tramway on Saturday 22 April and took Tram No. 1 out for visitors. Because of the COVID 19 lockdowns, this was the first time the tram had been able to carry passengers since 2019.
Over 350 people took the opportunity to take a relaxed and gentle horse tram ride through the gardens in Australia’s oldest working tram car. Built in 1887, the tram operated in Ballarat until 1913, and for a while was used as a trailer to carry extra passengers behind the electric trams.
The tram has been extensively rebuilt by volunteers in our workshop. Follow us on Facebook to find out when the tram will next be out on the tracks.
