Sydney had trams until 1961 (they now have trams again but modern ones this time) and they had some contemporary trams similar to Melbourne but they were better known for their “Toast Racks”. These were trams with seats that went all the way across the tram and the Conductor would collect the fares on the foot board in all weathers, a rather hazardous occupation.

The number on this badge represent a “University Conductor”. Both Sydney and Melbourne would employee students as conductors over the Christmas holiday period to allow their regular staff to go on leave. This also gave the students some welcome income.
