The conductor’s bell is mounted on the ceiling of the motorman’s cabin. There is a bell at each end of the tram. Attached to the bell is a long leather strip, known as a “bellcord”. By pulling the bellcord, it makes the striker hit the bell and make it ring.
Using this system, the conductor and passengers can communicate with the motorman. One bell means stop at the next tram stop. Two bells means the conductor is sure that all the passengers are safely on or off the tram, and it is ready to move. Three bells is means STOP immediately – this is only used in emergencies.
