This spring loaded coin dispenser held coins in the conductor’s bags. They allowed the coins to be kept together by value to make giving change for fares much easier. This dispenser is holding coins from pre 1966. Decimal currency was introduced into Australia on 14 February 1966.
From left to right the coins are:
* Threepence (3d), value three cents, called a “thripenny bit”.
* Sixpence (6d), value five cents, called a “zac” or a “trey”.
* Shilling (1/-), value 10 cents, called a “bob” or a “deenah”.
* Halfpenny, value half a cent, called a “ha’penny”.
* Penny (1d), value one cent.
* Florin (2/-), value 20 cents, called “two bob”.
There were 12 pennies in a shilling, and 20 shillings in one pound.
The changes to the Australian currency was explained in this video made by the Decimal Currency Board in 1965.
