Lake Wendouree

The northern terminus of the Museum tramway at St. Aidan’s Drive, provides stunning views across Lake Wendouree. The lake was once the Ballarat water supply during the gold rush of the 1850’s. In 1956 it was the site of the rowing events for the Melbourne Olympic Games. On the eastern skyline is Mount Warrenheip (“Emu Feathers”), a long dormant volcano. The bluestone gate pillars once held large iron gates to keep wandering stock from getting into the Botanical Gardens. St. Aidan’s Drive was the site of an Anglican Seminary. On the small islands in the lake, you will often see a family of swamp wallabies.
