Gothenburg Tramways, Sweden

The Gothenburg Tramways is a large modern system in Sweden. Until the 1980’s they had very smart military style uniforms. They had two different ones, one for winter and one for summer. The summer uniform is a light grey color. We do have one in the collection, but it is not currently on display. If you would like to see it please ask one of guides who may be able to arrange it.  The winter uniform was identical but dark blue and a heavy material against the severe cold. In even earlier times, they used a “Forage” cap (see Item 12), later they just removed the white top of their peaked caps.

Gothenburg Tramway opened in 1879 as a horse powered tramway and electrification started in 1902. As of 2006 the system was 160 kilometres and had a fleet of 200 trams.
